Buildings, street scenes and building lighting! One of the unintended, perhaps latent, interests that my N scale layout has spawned in me, is an interest for building a miniature city in N scale. The below posts cover various structures, scratch-builds, observations, and attempts at recreating a 1:160 sized city:
Building | Building Number | Image |
---|---|---|
CMR "GORHAM BUILDING": This is a very nice kit from Custom Model Railroads. No scratch-building, but I did add an extension to make it taller, and of course added lights. |

"LATVERIA METRO STATION": A year-long kit-bash/scratchbuild to convert four Walther's Northern Light & Powerhouse kits into an elevated, turn-of-the-century style two-track metro station. Here's my begining in Jan of 2016. | 4 Walther's Northern Light + Scratch built. | |
LUETKE MODELLBAHN 26 STORY OFFICE TOWER: This 9 post series covers the construction of Luetke Modellbahn kit for a circular, modern high rise. Here is the complete list of the posts/steps for this building:
Step 0 (Preparations)
| Luetke Modellbahn 63288 and 63289 |

"SKYNET" THE TOMIX HIGH RISE KITBASH: A combination of three of the Tomix high rises to create the corporate headquarter for the nefarious SkyNet corporation! Also, check out the video covering the progress and steps to assemble and light this building. | Tomix 4050 | |
THE "KEHL BUILDING" KITBASH: Combining two hard to find Kibri "Kehl" stations into a high rise building | Kibri 7402 | |
MODERN FLAT-IRON STYLE BUILDING SCRATCHBUILD PROJECT: To fill an odd-shaped area in my downtown, I had to scratchbuild a modern high rise. I go through each step in the process to show you how I did it: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and completion. | Scratch-built | |
KATO 5th AVENUE BUILDING MODIFICATIONS: Lights and minor details on this recent Kato release | Kato 23-437 | |
KATO BROADCAST BUILDING MODIFICATIONS: Lights and kit-bashing on this recent Kato release | Kato 23-436 | |
LIGHTING A JAPANESE CARD BUILDING: I bought this scratch-built card building from an individual in Japan and added interior lighting and details. | Scratch-built | |
"GODZILLA CORP" SKYSCRAPER SCRATCHBUILD: My first attempt at building a skyscraper from scratch. My steps and process starts with this post. It ends with this post. The step by step posts: Part 1, Part 2, and completion. | Scratch-built | |
"SONY BUILDING" SCRATCHBUILD: This is my second 'high rise" scratchbuild, and ultimately became the "Sony Building" but it took forever! | Scratch-built | |
TOMYTEC SHOWA BUILDING MODIFICATION: Combining two TomyTec office buildings for a taller building. Original pre-kitbash review here. | TomyTec #61 | |
TRAMWAY "STAR HOUSE": This building combines three kits from a company out of Japan with a ground floor from some excess Tomix buildings. My original review prior to kit-bashing is here. | Tramway SUB01 | |
HILTON (HELJAN) GRAND HOTEL: This is a kit bash of two Heljan "Grand Hotel" kits combined to give extra height. | Heljan 1713 | |
THE KIBRI BUILDING: A kit-bash of two Kibri 7130 buildings! | Kibri 7130 | |
FALLER OFFICE TOWER: An older kit from Faller with some minor modifications and additions. | Faller B-905 | |

THE HSBC SKYSCRAPER: The 'square' Atlas Syscraper, somewhat modified.... | Atlas Skyscraper | |
GREENMAX # 29 OFFICE BUILDING KITBASH: One of my favorites...a 'doubled up' office building of the Greenmax 29 kit. I don't really have a good name for this building, just "Greenmax 29". ;-) | Greenmax 29 | |
DPM HILLTOWN HOTEL KITBASH: 17 story build of the DPM Hotel sections. Again, another building without a name. Need to work on that I guess! | DPM Hilltown Hotel | |
"SPIELWAREN" RESTORATION: Another mystery building from eBay gets a repaint, lighting, a minor kit bash and some minor detailing. Vollmer 7727 | Vollmer 7727 | |
"BURGER KONIG" / OFFICE BUILDING: One of my earlier attempts at lighting and signage. | Greenmax 46-6 | |
RHODAN BUILDING APARTMENTS: A big gothic-looking urban building! In reality, its the Stump Tower from Lunde. Lunde Stump Tower | Lunde Stump Tower | |
EBAY JUNKER TO SHAKEY'S PIZZA: This unidentified building arrived as quite a mess, but I took it apart, repainted, cleaned, detailed, and lit it up to give it a new life. | Faller 2277 | |
TOMYTEC BUILDINGS: Combining several TomyTec buildings to create a small strip of shops. | TomyTec "Machinami" Collection No. 7 | |
AOSHIMA APARTMENTS: This building is the Kenchiku-Roman-Do, No. 1 from Skynet in Japan. The official kit includes 2x 5 story buildings, so this is a combination of 2 kits to reach 20 stories! | SkyNet | |
KATO and VOLLMER HYBRID STATION: Combining the standard Kato Overheard Station with a modern Vollmer station to add more to both models. | Kato 23-200 & Vollmer 7510 | |
24 HOUR GROCER: Detailing the interior and adding LED's and signage were the only changes to this cheap eBay find. Unidentified | Unidentified | |
CYLINDRICAL BUILDING: This interesting building from TomyTec got about a bazillion LED's lights and lots of detail in the 'glass cylinder' area. Tomytec | TomyTec | |
PEKING GARDEN: No link to a post on one of my early, very simple lighting and signage addition to a nice looking TomyTec building. TomyTec "Machinami" Collection No. 7 | TomyTec "Machinami" Collection No. 7 | |

KATO OFFICE BUILDING: No link to a post on this building, just two Kato 23-434A buildings doubled up with multiple floors of office details and lot's of LED's. | 2x Kato 23-434A | |
TOMYTEC KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN: One of my very early attempts at lighting and modding a TomyTec building. | TomyTec "Machinami" Collection No. 7 | |
TOMIX "PENSION" BUILDING LIGHTING PROJECT: This Tomix Pension building always looked like a restaurant to me. So its become the "Krusty Krab". This was also my very first lighting project using LED's that I soldered myself. | Tomix "Pension" 4035 | |
RURAL STATION FROM THE PLM: This kit from ABE (Atelier Belle Epoque) from France provides a quiant country station...I added lighting and painted of course! | Atelier Belle Epoque | Image |
SCRATCHBUILT OFFICE FURNITURE: If you light your buildings, your going to eventually want to do something about the interiors. My attempt at scratch-building some office furniture. | Scratch-built | |
N SCALE CARS: Cars, cars, cars! 'Nuff said. | Various | |
THE "SMIT ROTTERDAM" AND THE HARBOR. Every modeller wants a water feature, and I finally got most of mine completed with a big boat! | Heller 80620 | |
FALLER 2293 KITBASH: Another one of my larger buildings was based on a combination of 4 used and 4 new in box kits of the Faller 2293 office building (one of my favorites despite being a bit under-sized). This took me about a year, starting back in August of 2010! | Faller 2293 | |
THE FAILED SCRATCHBUILD: I had this idea I wanted to try out to make scratchbuilding modern buildings easier...well, it didn't work out, and I ulimately decided this building did not quite look right, so it got scrapped and parts were later used on other buildings. My progress on this starts here, Part 2 here, and the final here. | Scratch-built and scrapped! | |
